Dopo il successo di Vegetation as a political agent, che intendeva restituire una storia politica al mondo vegetale, GROW IT YOURSELF - seconda esposizione curata da Marco Scotini, parte della programmazione artistica del PAV per il 2015 - si concentra su alcune recenti esperienze internazionali di forme cooperative di riproduzione sociale e del comune: dalle pratiche collettive del farming, alle organizzazioni comunitarie, dal sistema delle fattorie, al crescente movimento degli orti urbani, l’esposizione raccoglie una serie di esperimenti in cui la produzione agricola, nell’autogestione delle risorse naturali e le sue conseguenze sulle politiche alimentari, traccia un rapporto costitutivo tra pratiche artistiche e abilità sociali.
In un momento di crisi dei sistemi di vita come quello attuale è possibile resistere alla subordinazione ai rapporti neoliberisti di produzione e sottrarsi al controllo dell’economia monetaria e di mercato? In altri termini: è possibile un uso non capitalistico delle risorse naturali, un’opposizione al modello di sviluppo espropriativo ed estrattivo che viene imposto in ogni latitudine del globo? Come reagire, per esempio, di fronte alla recente approvazione del tra gli Stati Uniti e l’Unione Europea? Può l’esperienza dei Commons essere pensata quale fondamenta di un nuovo modo di produzione?
Gli esperimenti sociali raccolti nella mostra Grow It Yourself affermano, nelle loro articolazioni e nella messa in campo di micropolitiche al confine tra pratiche artistiche e arti rurali, come oggi l’agricoltura possa divenire terreno di resistenza a partire dal quale tessere soggettività collettive.
L’esposizione si sviluppa attraverso la ricerca del collettivo Myvillages (fondato da Kathrin Böhm, Wapke Feenstra e Antje Schiffers nel 2003) presentando i risultati di un autentico sforzo collettivo per un futuro sostenibile. I Futurefarmers (Amy Franceschini, Anya Kamenskaya, Stijn Schiffeleers, Michael Swaine e Lode Vranken) presentano la documentazione video di alcuni lavori realizzati in situ nel corso degli anni. Fernando Garcia-Dory ha elaborato una panoramica del progetto Inland – Campo Adentro in cui sono presenti i lavori di Mario Garcia Torres, Susana Velasco etc. Piero Gilardi propone Ecoagorà, installazione che consiste in un piccolo anfiteatro ottagonale di legno, luogo di discussione e confronto, che ospita, oltre alle persone, oggetti simbolici della riconversione ecologica (attrezzi per l’agricoltura biologica, alimenti e manufatti creativi) e che ha come sfondo immagini emblematiche del disastro ecologico.
Nel corso della stagione estiva, infatti, il PAV ospiterà intellettuali, artisti e figure provenienti dal mondo rurale (tra cui Christian Marazzi, Silvia Federici, ecc), in un susseguirsi di momenti di riflessione stimolati dalle tematiche affrontate dalle opere in mostra.
Queste esperienze, situate tra pratiche artistiche e agricole, volontariamente, si propongono come alternative ai modelli dominanti del capitale e alla logica consumistica del mercato neoliberale, dei grandi apparati della distribuzione e i loro effetti sulla società contemporanea e sull’ambiente, sia fisico che sociale, fino all’affermazione della “sovranità alimentare”, in un processo di riavvicinamento alla terra e di “urbanizzazione rurale”.
Infatti in Grow It Yourself vengono indagate le politiche agro-alimentari e le dinamiche della produzione, i rapporti di potere che regolano i modi e le forme attuali in cui un prodotto della terra possa diventare cibo. La mostra, a partire dall’etica e dalle pratiche Do it yourself, mette in discussione le dinamiche monopolistiche della grande distribuzione agricola a favore dell’autoproduzione, quale pratica indispensabile se vogliamo recuperare il controllo sulla produzione alimentare, rigenerare l’ambiente e provvedere alla sussistenza.

After the success of the Vegetation as a political agent project, whose aim was to trace a political history of the botanical world, the second group exhibition curated by Marco Scotini, as part of the 2015 artistic programme of Turin’s PAV, Grow It Yourself focuses on some recent international experiences of cooperative forms of social and communal production. From collective farming practices, to community organisations, from farm systems to the expanding movement of urban community gardens, the exhibition brings together a series of experiments in which agricultural production, the self-management of natural resources and its effect on food policies, unfold a constituent relationship between the artistic practices and social skills.
Is it possible to resist subordination to neo-liberal production relationships and avoid control by monetary and market economics, in a moment of crisis of life systems such as we are currently experiencing? In other words, is a non-capitalistic use of natural resources still possible in order to oppose the expropriating and extracting model of development that has been imposed at every latitude of the globe? How should we react, for example, when faced with the recent approval of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), between the United States and the European Union? Can the Commons experience be considered as the basis of a new production method?
The social experiences collected in the Grow It Yourself exhibition, with their manifold articulations and micro-political capacity, always on the verge between artistic practices and rural arts, strongly affirm that agriculture today can become that terrain of resistance, starting from where one may still affect the collective subjectivities.
The exhibition includes works by the Myvillages collective (an initiative of international inspiration created by Kathrin Böhm, Wapke Feenstra and Antje Schiffers in 2003) presenting the results of an authentic collective effort for sustainable future. Futurefarmers (Amy Franceschini, Anya Kamenskaya, Stijn Schiffeleers, Michael Swaine and Lode Vranken) show a set of video documentation of their recent in situ collaborations. Fernando Garcia-Dory has elaborated a new proposal starting from the Inland – Campo Adentro project, including the works by Mario Garcia Torres, Susana Velasco etc. Piero Gilardi has created especially for this occasion Ecoagorà, a small, octagonal amphitheatre in wood, the place for discussion and debate, with symbolic objects of ecological reconversion (tools for organic farming, food and creative objects) and backdrop of the emblematic images of an ecological disaster. During the summer season, PAV will host intellectuals, artists (Christian Marazzi, Silvia Federici, etc.) and individuals from the rural world for a reflection on subjects tackled by the exhibition.
These interdisciplinary projects presented, voluntarily, set themselves up as alternatives to the dominant model of capitalism and to the apparatus of a large scale distribution and the devastating effects it leaves on society and the environment, both physical and social, in order to affirm the ‘food sovereignty’ during the process of re-acquaintance with the soil and ‘rural urbanisation’.
In effect, Grow it Yourself aims to investigate agro-food politics and the dynamics of production, together with the power relationships that regulate current methods and forms in which production from the earth can become food. The Do it yourself ethics and practices, question the monopolistic dynamics of large scale agricultural distribution, favouring self-production as an inevitable method in order to regain control of food production, regenerate the environment and provide for subsistence.
